I made this chart after reading an article that informed me that sitting more than six hours a day was effectively killing me. I immediately flipped out and started eating lunch standing up (which I still do pretty frequently). However, that only brings my daily sit time down to about 23 hours.

Anyway, learning this fact made me wonder what other things were lowering my lifespan.

Explanations and sources for each fact can be found here: http://bit.ly/IAPhpl

…and yes, you read that right…NOT drinking alcohol (in moderation) supposedly reduces lifespan.

guess i have to drink in moderation more often!

ilovecharts:

Time really flies so fast. It has already been five years since I graduated from this wonderful institution and yet I still feel like I’m a student, like one of you, boys and girls, or should I say young men and women. Like you, I still enjoy watching live UAAP basketball games and I’m a certified TV junkie who still loves to watch shows that cater to your age bracket. I have never imagined that I’ll be addressing such a huge group at this point of my early career. Not because I have nothing to say, but it’s more of that I am in denial of the fact that I am not getting any younger. But I am very glad to be here to see new and familiar places and faces. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dean Austria, Vice Dean Cruz, Mr. Hapitan, and to all the faculty and staff of the College of Business and Economics for giving me the chance to be a part of this special occasion.

Probably, the general feeling or sentiment of the soon-to-be graduates in this auditorium right now is UNCERTAINTY. I know that you are ecstatic because for the next couple of days, weeks, and even months, you have this newfound freedom—no more books, no more teachers, no more school. But aside from the feeling of happiness due to your “academic independence/freedom,” you must admit that you are somewhat unsure and nervous about leaving the safe and comfortable world of DLSU. Several questions might be running through your head right now: “What’s going to happen to me?” “What job will I get into?” “Where will I apply?” “What if I bomb out on my job interview?” And the most important and pervasive question of all: “What do I really want in life?”

Perhaps most, if not all, of you are thinking what a 26-year old like me could possibly say to inspire you this afternoon. Don’t worry, I won’t be talking about the recent bank collapses in Wall Street or the US bailout program, or its effects and ramifications in the Philippines. Besides, you can just easily search articles on the internet and read all about it from Bloomberg, BusinessWorld, or The Economist. So for the next couple of minutes, I’ll be sharing with you things that I have learned, both the easy and the hard way, through the years. I may have been in the corporate world for merely five years, but I would like to believe that I have acquired valuable life lessons in this relatively short span of time. And I hope that by sharing these things with you, life after college will be a little less uncertain for you.

Lasallians are generally very competitive. We have this constant need and want to succeed in all that we do, the persistent desire to be on the right side of the bell curve always. While it is okay and even admirable to aim for perfection, committing mistakes is necessary in life. Our mistakes remind us that we cannot always be on top—that there are times our stars won’t shine the brightest. Just as the DLSU Green Archers came short in defending their championship title this season, much so against our number one rival, our failures make us realize that everything happens for a reason—it instills in us a feeling of optimism that in down times, there is no way to go but up.

I, personally, have had my own share of wrong career moves and decisions. I left my first job after only being in the company for over a year because I couldn’t take the intense politics in our department. I hastily grabbed at the first job offer that came my way despite the fact that I knew the job description didn’t fit me—it was a job in sales/marketing yet I hated dealing with annoying and irate clients. But at that time, I was in complete denial that I was transferring to another company because I desperately wanted a quick way out. Instead, I made myself believe that I wanted to give sales a shot—that it might even be my cup of tea! Unfortunately, it wasn’t and I only managed to last 8 months in my second job. During those 8 long months, I was miserable for the sole reason that I did not like what I was doing—I am definitely not your marketing gal and I knew that I was better off crunching numbers and analyzing trends and figures.

But with a lucky twist of fate, I was able to get in touch with a former prospective employer from a financial advisory firm. He needed an analyst, I needed a new job. This time around, I knew better. I contemplated for a while before making my final decision because if ever it pushed through, I will be transferring from a large multinational company to a small, local firm. At that time, a lot of people were telling me that transferring to that small, local corporation might not be a good idea because I was giving up stability and prestige in my present job then. But I took a leap of faith, went against all odds, and after 3 years, I am still with that small and local yet good and growing company, very happy and content. I am so proud of myself for making that not-so-popular decision. It took me a couple of mistakes and wrong turns before I found my niche but it made my career journey much more exciting and rewarding.

We often hear the term “the real world” referring to life outside of the university. Before graduating, I never really figured out what that term meant; in fact, I thought it was absurd because it implied that my experiences in school were not real, or in short, fake. But now, I understand where it’s all coming from. Indeed, corporate life is similar to college life in the sense that you have to work hard and earn your slot if you want to succeed. But based on experience, corporate life is way tougher than college life. Do not expect your supervisors and bosses to be nice to you always just as your college professors have shown consideration to you. Being one of the youngest in the organization does not mean that everybody will go out of their way to help you. You need to learn to be independent yet able to blend well in a team environment. Be hardworking and diligent—when a task is assigned to you, know the facts and do your homework! Just as Michael Scofield meticulously planned and did his research on how to get his brother out of Fox River Prison, the same degree of resourcefulness is expected of you by your colleagues and superiors.

Being a neophyte in an organization, you are not expected to know everything so don’t pretend that you do. If you do not understand something, simply ask. Do not be afraid to ask questions and do not be afraid to look stupid because believe me, you will look more foolish if you act as if you had it all under your belt, when in reality, you don’t. Just as Lisa Simpson eagerly raises her hand to ask questions to her teacher, Miss Hoover, you should likewise show initiative, be inquisitive, and have that continuous yearning to learn. A quick warning though: please refrain from asking questions just for the sake of asking. Make sure that your questions are relevant so that you won’t appear just making pa-bibo to your bosses.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, corporate life is tough and demanding. That’s just the way it is because there are some people who may make your life at the office, to put it nicely, interesting. You cannot avoid these people—wherever you go, you will encounter such individuals. Always remember that you cannot please everybody no matter how hard you try. I’m not saying that it doesn’t pay to be cordial to your officemates but you should not mope around or feel bad if you get criticized once in a while. So instead of trying to be super friendly to everybody all the time, be true to yourself! Just as Dr. Gregory House fights for his medical theories even if everybody is against him, stand up for your convictions and fight for your ideals most especially if you know that you are right and you are not taking advantage of anybody.

For five years that I have been working, this is probably the most important lesson that I could impart to everybody that’s why I’m saving it for last: sincere appreciation of even the smallest act of kindness shown to you. A simple smile or thank you goes a long, long way. Be genuinely grateful for all the blessings you have received. Being thankful even for the simplest things acknowledges the fact that you cannot do it all on your own, that you wouldn’t be where you are right now without the help of other people and a higher being. Just like our very own and well-admired Green Archer, JV Casio, may we all learn to be humble despite our accomplishments and achievements. Exemplifying humility is a challenging task that can only be done by truly remarkable individuals. As Benjamin Franklin aptly put it, “Humility makes great men twice honorable.”

Hope that I was able to give you helpful tips and was at least able to take out a little bit of that feeling of uncertainty. Congratulations and good luck to you, dear CBE graduates! One last advice: enjoy life, work hard, party harder, laugh often, eat well, and drink moderately. Conquer the world and make your alma mater proud!
